Welcome to the end of the calendar year! Some things you should know:
Sex Education!- Get the FACTS
Okay, so I'm exaggerating because I want to make sure you read this. It is the time of year when we offer our FACTS class for our “middle school students.”
FACTS is a highly successful relationship education program developed under a federally funded demonstration project. Throughout the year, we have been teaching about character foundation skills, consequences of actions, using good judgement, and being respectful and responsible. On Thursday, December 18rth, we will be teaching the final unit of this curriculum, which deals with puberty. For this particular lesson, the boys and girls will be separated. The girls will be taught by Mrs. Hans and the boys will be taught by Mr. Vieira.
This lesson will cover physical changes that are experience during puberty, as well as hygiene. The reproductive anatomy of both sexes will be taught to both classes in a professional and respectful manner. The session will conclude with an anonymous question and answer session.
The emphasis of the entire curriculum is to encourage frequent communication between the child and parents. Cascade Heights believes that parents are the primary educators of their children and the best source of information in these issues. Parents should frame this information in the social and moral context of your own family.
We will be sending home a discussion packet on the entire unit that we would like you to take the time to discuss with your child over winter break. It includes a few questions that can be discussed at the dinner table, etc. to allow for communication of what has been taught in class.
One purpose of this notification is to offer you an opportunity to opt out of this lesson. We will be sending home a form. Please check the box whether or not you would like your child to attend and then sign. Any student not turning in a form will be assumed as opting out.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Hans or Mr. Vieira. We are happy to show you the lesson plans and the video.
December Studies
Social Studies
Religion- We spent a quick week studying the origins of Judaism and Christianity. Students were assigned 150 word reflection on the topic of religion.
Ancient Rome- The end of December is dedicated to the study of Ancient Rome. We are focusing on the establishment of the Republic, Rome's spread and growth, Caesar, and lasting influence.
Busy Month
Field Trip- Taking place next week on Wednesday!
ASA- We are in charge this month!
Winter Showcase- See below for more information about the showcase. It's not to be missed!
Winter Showcase- We will rule the stage!
You are invited to join the staff and students of Cascade Heights on December 18th at 6:30 PM for an evening performance highlighting current units by all 9 classes. Each class will perform twice, once in the gym and once in the cafeteria, so feel free to sit in either room.
Our evening performance begins at 6:30 PM. Family and friends may take their seats beginning at 6:10 while students make their way to their classrooms. We are expecting a full house, so be there early for the best seats. Guests may park in the staff parking lot on the north side of the building, in front of our building, and in the gravel parking lot south of the building. We ask that everyone enter through the front doors, unless you need wheelchair access. If you have someone with you that needs wheelchair access, you may pull into the staff parking lot, park in the handicap spot, and use the buzzer on the breezeway door.
Reminders:
~ Students will be told by their individual teacher what to wear. If in doubt, wear your school uniform.
~There will be concessions available for purchase. All proceeds will go towards the 8th grade end of the year trip to the Shakespeare Festival.
~ The adult bathroom is located to the right as you exit the gym.
~ You are more than welcome to take pictures or film the show, but please do so from your seat or standing in the back of the room.
~ Please silence your cell phone and all other noise making devices.
~ At the end of the performance, students will need to be picked up from their classrooms. Please send one parent down to pick them up. In order to minimize interruptions to the performance, students will not be released until the end of the show.
Lunch Detention and New Year Expectations
Students who do not submit Riggs Corrections, Homework, and other Assignments are kept inside during lunch to work on missing assignments. Please CHECK YOUR CHILD'S PLANNER and MAKE SURE THEY HAVE DONE THEIR WORK. A signature says that you've seen it and had a conversation with your child about their work.
As we progress through the school year, assignments and expectations and consequences will increase. Please monitor your child as they grow into a responsible middle-schooler.
Tale of Troy
Thank you for typing up our raw work! We will be taking a look at our scripts soon and begin to plan, plot and practice for our first dramatic production of the school year. Our tentative new production date is in the end of January, after Science Fair has concluded.
IEW Training- Postponed
With few responses to our offer of an IEW training, it is being postponed. Please keep an eye open for new dates!
Copying student Novels- Volunteer Task
I would like a volunteer to come in and make copies of student's NANOWRIMO novels. This will be useful for editing, records, and any that go "missing" during this process.
Science Fair Selfie Contest- E-mail
Please send submissions for the selfie contest to: [email protected]
