Greetings!
With the play quickly approaching, sixth and seventh graders have been getting a great deal of unstructured work time in class while we practice individual scenes and songs. Unfortunately, many students have used this time unwisely; while they were to be working on their novels, they chose instead to be off task and cause disruptions to others. In light of this, we have chosen to instill several changes to our classroom setup and daily in-class assignments. Students now have assigned seating when not working on the play and during other core classes. They will no longer work on novels at school but will instead be required to finish them at home. There will be several additional changes in the coming weeks and we will communicate them as they are implemented.
It is our intent to help students get back on track and remember that the classroom is a learning environment. We are optimistic that these changes will assist and support students in their learning. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We always appreciate prompt communication from families.

Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science:
Sixth grade is very excited to attempt a new project for their ocean unit this year. We are going to create a life-sized, walk through exhibit of the ocean floor! There will be more details to come, please speak with your child about the preliminary ideas we have. Students should come to school on Monday with three ocean floor regions they are willing to be an expert on. The regions will be assigned on a first come basis, so be sure to arrive on time!
Seventh grade is studying Mitosis, Meiosis, and DNA replication. This week students got the chance to create a 3-dimensional DNA strand. They also created creatures with specific phenotypes and assigned genotypes to each. They then created Punnett Squares with a classmate to determine the probability of offspring genotype and phenotype. We ended the week creating DNA name sequences out of beads. Several students were excited to keep their name DNA as a necklace, bracelet, or zipper pull! Be sure to ask your child about their DNA strand.
Upcoming Due Dates:
Monday, March 13th - come prepared with questions about Chapter 3
Wednesday, March 15th - Meiosis booklet due and Chapter 3 Test
Literature:
It’s drama time! For the next two weeks our classes will be working to bring classical literature to life. This year we have chosen to combine the story of The Prince and the Pauper with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde into a live, 80’s themed musical performance. Students have been assigned their parts and should be memorizing their lines and song lyrics!
Computers:
Please note, due to off task behavior and misuse of time, sixth and seventh grades have lost library privileges. We hope to reinstate library time later in the year.
Students have the goal of earning five stars on all Typing Club levels. They should work on this throughout the remainder of the year. Ms. Venture is available to open the computer lab for student use on Mondays and Wednesdays after school and most Fridays. Please contact her if you would like to take advantage of the lab during these times.
Mr. Vieira’s Updates:
Riggs (Spelling): There will be no Riggs for the next two weeks as we step up our play practice. Riggs will begin again after the break.
History/Geography:
Final exams for both grades will take place on Tuesday, March 14th. Students will be allowed to use notes on the exam.
Upcoming units for 6th grade include Latin American Independence Movements and American Immigration.
Our final Social Studies unit for the year in 7th grade is going to be World War II.
Writing:
Students should be finishing up the editing process with their novels. By the end of the month students will be expected to have submitted final draft versions of their stories for grading. When we return in April we will take some time to produce a class set of our stories for each grade. Thank you for your support with this project!
