Good afternoon, families!
Parents have voiced concerns about homework during our conferences, and we would like to clarify a few points. Nightly (regular) assignments include:
An example would be a class which meets on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. An assignment is given out on Wednesday, the student has until the following Monday to complete that assignment. We will usually give smaller assignments at the beginning of the week and larger ones toward the end, so students have more time to complete them.
Additionally, students do not have Riggs on Thursdays, so they will have one less assignment to contend with at the end of the week. We hope this clears up any confusion. Please feel free to contact us if needed.
Upcoming Events/Dates:
November 3rd- Sock Hop 3:45 to 4:30
November 4th - Parent Teacher Conferences
November 23rd and 24th- Thanksgiving Break (Wednesday and Thursday)
Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science: Seventh grade has moved into Chemistry and is investigating chemical reactions. Sixth grade has moved into their studies of plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes.
Literature: Seventh grade students spent the week learning about common foreign phrases used in English. They will be creating skits to present these phrases to the class next week. Sixth grade is continuing Mythology and enjoying the stories!
Computer/Library: Both classes visit the computer lab on Tuesdays! We are continuing with Typing Club. Students should continue to practice their typing at home: chpcs7th.typingclub.com
Next week I will be sending home a permission slip for students to receive a CHPCS email account. This account will be used in class for various activities and will allow students to access Google Classroom, a tool Mr. Vieira and I will start using for Science and Social Studies in the coming weeks.
Mr. Vieira’s Updates:
Riggs (Spelling): We continue to gain 6 new words on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We then test the 30 most recent words. Each day your child should have a slip of paper stapled into their planner that identifies words missed on the spelling test. They should practice these mixed words when they do their homework.
History/Geography: Sixth grade learned about the origins of the Olympics and the Persian Wars. Next week we will talk about Athen’s golden age. Seventh grade learned about the Russo-Japanese War, the advent of the machine gun, the Franco-Prussian War, and Otto von Bismarck of Prussia. Next week we will learn about European colonial expansion.
Writing: Both grades are working on re-telling narratives. We are currently producing work from the outline to the final draft stage. For more information visit the writing section for your child’s grade (6th or 7th) on our blog.
