Good afternoon, families!
Our third week is over and all is well!
As questions and concerns arise, please communicate openly and directly with your child’s teachers. We request that you always include Ms. Venture and Mr. Vieira in the conversation, as we work very closely together to ensure your child’s success and well-being. For methods of communication, please see the end of this letter.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Jog-A-Thon
Our annual JOG-A-THON will take place on Thursday, Oct. 6th! This fundraiser put on by the PTA raises money for classroom stipends which pay for hands-on materials (such as our simulation table), guest speakers, bonus field trips, and much more. Green pledge sheets with more information came home last week. Please read and strategize with your child about obtaining donations, then join the fun by cheering on our class as students jog as many laps as they can in 30 minutes! This is our biggest classroom fundraiser of the year, and the most important! Fundraiser forms are due back Monday, October 3rd.
MAP Testing- We test Tuesday and Wednesday (September 27th and 28th)
Assessments for our students come in two forms: Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP) and Oregon's state benchmark tests, the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) for mathematics and English language arts and the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge Skills (OAKS) for science.
During the year, all children take MAP at least twice in Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics. Grades 2-8 also take the Science assessment. Administering these assessments twice a year yields two data points which allows for measuring growth through the course of the year.
For more information about MAP testing, please visit our school website here:
http://cascadeheights.org/academics/assessments.html
Please ensure your child has had plenty of rest and a good breakfast. They'll be doing some serious problem solving and fact recall most of the day, and need all the energy they can get. If you have additional questions, please contact us.

Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science: This week sixth graders continued their investigation of Astronomy by classifying stars by size. We then began to look at binary star systems and how scientists use the changes in light brightness to measure star size. Seventh graders were in the lab working on conservation of mass experiments.
Literature: We are continuing to develop knowledge of classical literature through The Prince and the Pauper (6th) and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (7th). Please ask your student to share with you information about storyline, characters, and interesting new vocabulary they have learned!
Computer/Library: The school’s library is looking great and is being used by all classes thanks to the continued efforts of 6th and 7th grade students!
