Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science: On Monday we continued our scientific investigations into Astronomy (6th) and Atomic Structure (7th). Please see the links below for access to my digital presentation materials. These will be useful for students that were absent, missed some of the notes in class, or need a bit more time with the material. On Wednesday we went to the lab to orient ourselves with the procedures and rules of that space before we begin running actual experiments. Students tried on lab coats and safety glasses, they were all quite stunning in their educational fashion.

Literature: We began our literature investigations this week with The Prince and the Pauper (6th) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (7th). These books will be used when we begin our play work in January. Students created a Table of Contents in their Literature notebooks, where they will keep a list of materials read this year. They also began a section for vocabulary. Students should use this space to write down any words they come across while reading that they don’t know. Then they should use a dictionary or the internet to determine the meanings. This notebook is also used to write about the text. Students will occasionally have questions they need to answer, but generally this is a space to write ideas about what they are reading.
Computer/Library: We spent this week in the library, getting it all set up for use. The entire school has benefited from the efforts of 6th and 7th as they have removed all books to be sold at the school’s rummage sale and reshelved library books. 6th and 7th grade will be responsible for maintaining the library this year. They are very excited about this.
Mr. Vieira’s Updates:
Riggs (Spelling): This week we continued reviewing our phonograms and practicing our Cursive Italic handwriting. This week we also began our Orthography testing. Orthography is a high frequency spelling test that gives us a good idea of how well students are learning high frequency words. It’s a tool for measuring growth, and does not appear in the gradebook. Students will not receive these tests back, however they will be provided with their scores on Monday. Spelling words will begin this coming week.
History/Geography: This week we continued making maps in our geography unit. Students were also assigned a map project. They are to use a variety of materials, scraps, and ingenuity to make a (somewhat 3d, textured) map. To see a copy of the map project expectations, please visit the following link:

A note on attendance:
It is very important that you send on all information to us about a student who will be tardy or absent. If we do not have the information our office is now required to call the family for absence. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 503.653.1850 ext2 and leave your child's first and last name, grade and reason for being absent. Thank you!
