Good afternoon, families!
Quentin Brown, a student in fifth grade, is asking for support with a Sock Drive. He is really excited about getting the whole school involved.
Who: Janus Youth Programs in SE Portland
What: New SOCKS! Any size! They will also accept gloves, scarfs, and hats
When: Now through December 1st
Where: Drop off items in 5th grade classroom (there is a box)
Contact: [email protected] (Quentin’s mother)
Quentin's goal is to collect 250 pairs of socks. If every student brings in one pair, he will meet this goal!
Upcoming Events/Dates:
November 23rd and 24th- Thanksgiving Break (Wednesday and Thursday)
December 1st - Last day of Sock Drive
December 8th - Winter Music Performance (5th - 8th Grade)
December 15th - 8th Grade Performance of Twelfth Night
December 19th - Winter Break
Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science: Seventh grade has moved into Chemistry and is investigating chemical reactions. We have created and played games in order to better understand the science and help us study for next week's test. Sixth grade has moved into their studies of plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. They are currently creating their own games to study these topics. Games are due November 21!
Literature: Seventh grade students spent last week learning about common foreign phrases used in English. They created and presented skits, teaching these phrases to the class. The skits were wonderful! This week we have started reading War Horse. This is a wonderful story that expertly depicts the atrocities of WWI and gives students a better grasp of that time in history. Sixth grade is continuing Mythology and enjoying the stories!
Computer/Library: Email accounts are up and running. You will be getting password access codes this weekend. The account will be used in class for various activities and will allow students to access Google Classroom, a tool Mr. Vieira and I will start using for Science and Social Studies in the coming weeks. Students should continue to practice their typing at home: chpcs7th.typingclub.com They are to be finished with all 100 lessons by December 15th. Many students have expressed concern about access to a computer. I informed them I was willing to stay an extra half hour every day to afford them time in the computer lab. Please contact me to verify if this is something your student would benefit from.
Mr. Vieira’s Updates:
Riggs (Spelling): We continue to gain 6 new words on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We then test the 30 most recent words. Each day your child should have a slip of paper stapled into their planner that identifies words missed on the spelling test. They should practice these mixed words when they do their homework.
History/Geography: Sixth grade is wrapping up their study of ancient Greece and will begin to learn about the Roman Empire next week. Seventh grade continues to study WWI and its devastating impact on soldiers and civilians alike.
Writing: Both grades are continuing their work of re-telling narratives. We are currently producing work from the outline to the final draft stage. For more information visit the writing section for your child’s grade (6th or 7th) on our blog.
