Monday is here and so is your sixth grade update. There are many ongoing and upcoming events, so please pardon the lengthiness of this update.
MAP Testing- We test tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 6th)
Assessments for our students come in two forms: Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP) and Oregon's state benchmark tests, the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) for mathematics and English language arts and the Oregon Assessment of KnowledgeSkills (OAKS) for science.
During the year, all children take MAP at least twice in Reading, Language Usage and Mathematics. Grades 2-8 also take the Science assessment. Administering these assessments twice a year yields two data points which allows for measuring growth through the course of the year.
For more information about MAP testing, please visit our school website here: http://cascadeheights.org/academics/assessments.html.
Please ensure your child has had plenty of rest and a good breakfast. They'll be doing some serious problem solving and fact recall most of the day, and need all the energy they can get. If you have additional questions, please contact me.
Jog-A-Thon- Thursday, October 8th
The Jog-A-Thon is our largest (and only) classroom fundraiser of the year. All the money students raise goes directly into their classroms to support learning by purchasing supplies, hiring guest speakers, etc.
Pledge sheets are due today. Return the filled out pledge sheet (just the sheet, no money, please) to your child’s teacher. You still have the weekend to collect pledges!
Grades 6-8 will participate on Thursday from 11:00 to 11:30 AM.
Thursday, October 22, 2015 - Pledge sheets and the total money collected are due. Put both in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and teacher’s name. Please make checks payable to CHPCS PTA and include your child’s name and teacher in the memo. Donations may also be made online at: http://cascadeheights.org/parents/cascade-heights-pta.html (Note: Any money collected after Oct. 22nd will be gratefully received but cannot be used to qualify for prizes.)
Book Fair-
The book fair begins this week! Please feel free to visit our book fair with your child during their open hours.
Harvest Festival- October 15th
Join the CHPCS community for a fun filled evening of free family frivolity. The Harvest Festival is a chance for CHPCS families and friends to get together and celebrate the turning of the season with music, games, and a baking contest. Hayrides, pumpkin decorating, tug o war, and needle in a haystack will keep the young and old entertained for hours. The fun begins at6:30 p.m. and ends at dusk or 7:30 p.m., whichever is first!
FIELD TRIPS!
Field Trip Friday- October 23rd
Our next field trip is Friday, October 23rd. We will be visiting the Portland Art Museum, the Historic US Bank in downtown Portland, and the Hellenic American Cultural Center. This is an all-day trip focused on Greek and Roman art and architecture. We still have need for two more chaperones, so please let me know if you can join us!
Greek Food event- October 15th (Thursday)
Each year we take our learning a step further by creating our own Greek appetizers! This is a fun and easy activity, great for anyone who loves Mediterranean flavors! Please let me know if you would like to join us for an hour or two as we experience a small taste of Greece.
Build a Roman Road- October 22nd, 2 PM
Last year's 6th grade class built an amphitheater with their 3rd grade buddy class. This year we are building a Roman style road. This unique activity involves a significant degree of manual labor, so if that's your cup of tea, please join us!
