Good afternoon, families!
Thank you to everyone for all of your support in this first week of school. From purchasing school supplies to attending Back to School Night, your involvement in your child’s education is what makes Cascade Heights an incredible place to learn and teach!
As questions and concerns arise, please communicate openly and directly with your child’s teachers. We request that you always include Ms. Venture and Mr. Vieira in the conversation, as we work very closely together to ensure your child’s success and well-being. For methods of communication, please see the end of this letter.
Upcoming Events/Dates:
September 27th and 28th- MAP Testing
October 5th- Student Picture Day
October 6th- Harvest Festival
Ms. Venture’s Updates:
Science: This week we began our investigations of Astronomy (6th grade) and Atomic Structure (7th grade). These will be our course of studies for the next few weeks. Please be sure to ask your student about the activities we did to introduce these concepts.
Literature: This week we began our conversation about what literature will look like. As we read, students will maintain a literature notebook. This notebook will be used as a way for students to actively and meaningfully engage with the books we read. Students will be expected to think critically about our reading, and communicate their thoughts through the notebook. Reading will begin next week with The Prince and the Pauper (6th) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (7th), the two stories we will use for our play later in the year.
Computer/Library: Sixth and Seventh graders will engage with the school’s library and computer lab on a regular basis. We will enter the library next week Tuesday and will begin working in the computer lab after MAP testing finishes in October. More information will come.
Mr. Vieira’s Updates:
Riggs (Spelling): This week we started reviewing our phonograms and practicing our Cursive Italic handwriting. This review will continue next week. Do not expect Riggs homework until we have started our actual spelling words. If you wish to see a running list of spelling words once we begin, visit the following links:

History/Geography: This week we started our geography unit. Students will be making world maps, labeling important details on these maps, and memorizing key bodies of water, deserts, and mountain ranges. To see a list of these details please visit the following link:

A note on student snacks and lunches:
As a school we are dedicated both to raising environmentally conscious students and to assisting parents in knowing what their children are and aren’t eating. We have a policy of pack-in/pack-out, which means that students will bring home all remains from their lunch, whether that means uneaten food or garbage. This helps you monitor your child’s eating habits and allows us to reduce waste at school!
